Lionel Jospin’s sudden and unexpected “retirement” from politics following his defeat in the 2002 French presidential election left a dramatic vacuum in the Socialist Party. With the May 2007 presidential election looming, “Candidates” follows the designation of the Socialist candidate. Filmed as a “gonzo” thriller, the film raises many questions about the inner workings of a political party in turmoil: How is a candidate created? How does a potential candidate convince those around him (or her) that they are the best chance of returning to power?
